Rodin Works: Bellona, Pallas wearing a casque |
In 1877, Rodin re-used the fierce portrait of Rose known as 'Mignon' (1867) in an unsuccessful application for a public commission for a statue of the French Republic. The work should should show an unbroken France, challenging her enemies - probably to make forget the unglorious defeat of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. A very similar composition - but lacking the belligerant facial expression - is titled 'Pallas wearing a casque'; a bronze cast can be found in the Musée Dr Faure in Aix-les-bains, France.
