H. de Roos - The critique of the toronto exhibition

1. THE MACLAREN COLLECTION WOULD CONTAIN POSTHUMOUS ENLARGEMENTS (2)

THE CARYATID CARRYING HER STONE

As for the Caryatid Carrying Her Stone, the Musée Rodin Website mentions an enlarged version exhibited at the Salon d'Automne of 1909, but I have not been able to check its dimensions yet. Elsen mentions that "at the time of Rodin´s death, Lebossé still had in his studio, if not on his machines, several works intended for enlargement. They include two Fallen Caryatids (one carrying a stone, the other an urn)." This would indicate that after the enlargement already made for the 1909 exhibition, a still larger version was planned but not completed before Rodin´s death.

From the eleven plasters of ''Cariatide à la pierre'', listed in the Joconde Database, we find two pieces already of the size indicated by the Gruppo Mondiale:

Commentaires

patine refaite

The 1916 acquisition date indicates this was a lifetime cast. So far, the Gruppo Mondiale´s statement that the Cantor Foundation would have initiated posthumous enlargements in order to "create additional market value" remains without evidence, unless we question the accuracy of the Joconde Database entries.
