Created by Isamu Noguchi in 1986, the Lillie & Hugh Roy Cullen
Sculpture Garden at the
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston contains 20 sculptures: Rodin, Matisse,
Bourdelle, Maillol and others.
The Museum owns one of the twelve casts of the enlarged version of
the Walking Man, authorized by the Musée Rodin and based on the
enlarged plaster version fabricated by Rodin and Henri Lebossé in 1905.
The first model dates from 1877, as a study for St John the Baptist
Preaching. In their conversations, Rodin and Paul Gsell discussed how this
sculpture suggests movement by showing various elements of a stride at
the same time.
