Galleria internationale di Arte Moderna Ca’ Pesaro, Venice

The Museum owns one of only two over-lifesize casts of the complete group of the Burghers of Calais (the other one being at the Musée Rodin, Paris).

The Museum also owns a plaster cast of The Thinker, purchased at the Biennale of 1907 (bronze color patina; Athena Spear notes that another bronze color plaster cast, owned by the Metropolitan Museum, New York, was cast after a bronze).

Here we find the following works by Rodin:

Tête au nez cassé, 1913, bronze, H. 26 cm,
acquired at the Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte

Bust of Eve Fairfax, bronze, H. 53 cm, given by the
artist at the Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte della
     Secessione
, Roma 1913.

(Spreckel - HdR)

The Age of Bronze, 1876, bronze, foundry mark
     Alexis Rudier (dark patina)

The Vatican Museum maintains a Collection of Modern Religious Art featuring hundred of works by modern artists, providing proof that this subject is still persisting in modern art. Here, we also find works by Rodin.

In 1915, Rodin sculpted a Bust of Pope Benedict XV during a trip to Rome. Although Rodin had asked for twelve sittings, the Pope refused to continue after three sessions and would not allow Rodin to see him in profile or from above. Instead, he proposed Rodin should copy a bust made by the Austrian sculptor Count Lipai. Back in Paris, Rodin complained to Renoir, the Pope had not given him a chance even to look at his holy ear [quoted in Grunfeld].

The founding of the Vatican Museums can be traced back to 1503 when the newly-elected Pope, Julius II della Rovere, placed a statue of Apollo in the internal courtyard of the Belvedere Palace built by Innocent VIII. The Musée Rodin donated another symbolic Hero of pagean Art to the Vatican Museum: a 1956 posthumous bronze cast of the Thinker (H. 27", foundry mark Georges Rudier).

"Rodin Plaster & Bronzes"

4 June 2000 -8 Nov. 2000

Palazzo delle Prigioni Nuove - Auguste Rodin Foundation
Venice

An excerpt from the press release:

"At Palazzo delle Prigioni Nuove there will be the opening of the exhibition of Auguste Rodin, who is generally recognized as the father of modern sculpture and the most important sculptor of the XIX century. The Rodin exhibition will take place in the historical rooms of the Palazzo delle Prigioni Nuove."

"The exhibition, organized by Arte Communications, will exhibit Rodin's most significant works in plaster, in which Rodin best expressed his genius. Rodin modeled his sculptures first in clay, which disintegrates over time, making then a negative mould from the clay to cast a permanent mould in plaster. The plaster was always the starting point for further innovations in the composition and reproduction in bronze or stone."

"The aim of this project is to collect examples of Rodin's most significant works. Such examples include, among others, universally renewed (sic! - HdR) figures such as The Thinker, The Age of Bronze, Eve, The Kiss and Balzac."

"There will also be about 40 of the most important works by the artist in bronze, most of them in both large and small versions, together with a smaller collection of photographs of these works documenting their history."

"This exhibition is the largest collection of original plasters and corresponding bronzes in the world - with the exception of the Museum Rodin in Paris."

"A book has been published by Gruppo Mondiale Est featuring the exhibition items and printed by Amilcare Pizzi with the contribution of private supporters. The photographic work was made by Mario Carrieri, considered the foremost photographer of sculptures. The book shows the history of the plasters and the bronze casts derived from them and confirms the high quality, validity and importance of this Rodin collection."
