In 1917, the painter Albert André became curator of this Museum. Supported by his artistic friends Renoir, Monet, Signac, Marquet, Bonnard, Jean Puy, de Rouart, Vollard, Durand-Ruel, Elie Faure, Paul Clémenceau, he was able to assemble this remarkable collection of modern art.

The donation of George and Adèle Besson in 1971, with several works of the impressionists and  post-impressionnists, enriched the collection with works of Matisse, Bonnard, Van Dongen, Berthe Morisot, Maillol, Picasso, Rodin and Camille Claudel.

Initiated by the Société historique et archéologique de Château-Thierry the 18 December 1876, the collection was enlarged by rich donators, who where passionated by the poet La Fontaine. The political supported acquisition of unique works from the 17th to the 20th century made further contribution to the inventory. 

In addition, the museum shows modern and contemporary art, religious art, craft, and the collection of miniatures by baron Feuillet de Conches (19th century).

The expert of the Royal Museums, Thomas Henry, founded this Museum in 1835, based on his personal collection. Later expanded by the legacy of the painter J-F. Millet and of M Ono, the uncle of his wife.

The museum shows 300 Italian paintings of the northern school, a tour through the French history of art and especially, about 30 paintings of Jean-François Millet, who was born 1814 in La Hague.

Artists are for example: Fra Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Brueghel de Velours, Murillo Clouet, Champaigne, Chardin, David, J.F Millet, G. Fouace, Le Veel.

This small museum's Rodin work is based on the legacy of Pierre-Antide Edmond Bigand-Kaire (1847-1924), who was a friend of Rodin, Redon, Moreau and other artists. The 1992 exhibition, organized by Gérard Fabre, gave an overview of Bigand-Kaire's life and several sculptures and drawings by Rodin. The exhibition catalog reprints ca. 200 letters to Rodin and Rodin's answers.
