Uli Schuster´s essay on Duchamp´s "Fountain", published on the Website of the Munich Luitpold Gymnasium as text for an art course, illustrates that this ready-made, conceived as a Dadaist anti-art symbol, has introduced a new understanding of what art can be altogether. As one of its consequences, the status of an art object and its economic value cannot be derived from traditional intrinsic qualities like masterly craftmanship or noble materials anymore: |

[From: Uli Schuster, Was macht ein Werk zum Kunstwerk?
Leistungskurs Kunsterziehung, Schuster concludes, "an art work is not recognized as such by the creative power of the author or by a certain artistic procedure. The assignment of value rather is a social act, to which the artist, but also the art market, art science, curators, art critics and the public contribute.(...) The appreciation of the original in art tells us, that two items may look completely identical, still we assign them a completely different value, call one item a "work of art", the other one a "fake", a "copy", a "ready-made" or a simple "object".
